The History and Future of Online Casinos

It is hard to imagine, but in the 1980s, there was no such thing as online casinos. Even in the early 1990s, there was no way to play casino games in your home for real money. Trying to imagine a world like that now is a daunting and frightening task, only made bearable by the thought that it is not a reality. Online casinos are here to stay, and here is where they came from, as well as where they seem to be going.

Online casinos began to see a bit of popularity in the mid 90s, and have been increasingly popular ever since. A large boost to the popularity of online casinos occurred when an online poker player won the World Series of Poker in 2003. Chris Moneymaker won an online tournament to qualify for the 2003 WSOP, and walked away with approximately $2.5 million dollars. This cemented online casinos as venues where serious players can come to play, and eliminated the questionable reputation that was associated with online casino play.

In the future, one can expect to see online casinos become bigger in every sense of the word. The graphics and sound will continue to improve, there will be a wider selection of playable games, games will be accessible from a greater variety of devices such as mobile phones and PDAs, and there will be a wider selection of payment options for the sites. The first decade has been good to the online casinos, and this seems to only be the beginning.
